Coexistence of glassy antiferromagnetism and giant magnetoresistance in Fe/Cr multilayer structures

چکیده
Using temperature-dependent magnetoresistance and magnetization measurements on Fe/Cr multilayers that exhibit pronounced giant magnetoresistance (GMR), we have found evidence for the presence of a glassy antiferromagnetic phase. This phase reflects the influence of interlayer exchange coupling (IEC) at low temperature (To140 K) and is characterized by a field-independent glassy transition temperature, Tg; together with irreversible behavior having logarithmic time dependence below a ‘‘de Almeida and Thouless’’ critical field line. At room temperature, where the GMR effect is still robust, IEC plays only a minor role, and it is the random potential variations acting on the magnetic domains that are responsible for the antiparallel interlayer domain alignment. r 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. Extraordinary Hall effect in Fe-Cr giant magnetoresistive multilayers
We show that for giant magnetoresistive Fe-Cr multilayer samples, the scaling law for the extraordinary Hall constant, RS;r n gives unrealistically large values of n(n52.8–3.3) if we use the resistivity r at an external field B50 as done by previous investigators. With B perpendicular to the film plane, the transverse magnetoresistance saturates at B'3 T in the 4.2–300 K temperature range. This...
متن کاملEvidence of spin-wave demagnetization in Fe–Cr giant magnetoresistance multilayers
The temperature dependence of the saturation magnetization of Xe ion-beam sputtered Fe–Cr multilayers has been measured between 5 and 300 K in the presence of a field greater than the saturation field sHsatd. With the application of Hsat, the zero-field antiferromagnetically coupled ferromagnetic Fe layers are forced to align ferromagnetically. We find that the thermal demagnetization of such m...
متن کاملEnhancement of perpendicular and parallel giant magnetoresistance with the number of bilayers in FeÕCr superlattices
We have correlated a detailed quantitative structural analysis by x-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and high spatial resolution electron energy-loss spectroscopy imaging, with the magnetization and anisotropic magnetotransport properties in sputtered Fe/Cr superlattices. To accomplish this, we developed a technique for magnetotransport measurements in metallic superlattices w...
متن کاملWidth dependence of giant magnetoresistance in Cu/Co multilayer nanowires
Electron beam lithography and ion milling have been used to pattern sputtered Cu/Co multilayer wires ranging in width from 750 to 35 nm. Samples having Cu thicknesses which correspond to the first, second, and third antiferromagnetic coupling maxima have been measured. Contrary to expectation, enhancement in the amplitude of the giant magnetoresistance with decreasing width was not observed. © ...
متن کاملGiant magnetoresistance of (001)Fe/(001)Cr magnetic superlattices.
We have studied the magnetoresistance of (001)Fe/(001)Cr superlattices prepared by molecularbeam epitaxy. A huge magnetoresistance is found in superlattices with thin Cr layers: For example, with rc, =9 A, at T =4.2 K, the resistivity is lowered by almost a factor of 2 in a magnetic field of 2 T. We ascribe this giant magnetoresistance to spin-dependent transmission of the conduction electrons ...
